Hello everyone
Well its been a busy month again and there has been a lot of progress with the Community Bank Project thanks to Dave Borger the Chairman and the committee members of Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun. There is also a lot of excitement around the Wings and Wheels project and a lot of work has been done for that so far also. We are now just waiting for approvals so we can move forward. The chamber has now filled the position of the Financial Adviser and we welcome Alison Harvey on board. Please feel free to drop into the office and say hi and have a coffee. RRCC AGM The date for the AGM has been set for the 29th October in the Red Room in Ravensthorpe at 7 pm. PROJECTS COMMUNITY BANK We were approved a grant of $5000 from BHP for the working fund which we will use for our marketing campaign. Lots of work and focus has been on promoting the bank and the committee came up with the idea to send out letters with a coffee sachet and organised an info session on the voting day. We are now focusing on pledges and getting as much publicity out in the community as possible. WINGS AND WHEELS We have had a couple of meetings for the Wings and Wheels and all of the committee members have been campaigning for their own sub-committees. The feedback of interest is excellent and is being well received. We are now waiting for approvals from the Shire and CASA before we can move forward. THE RESOURCE DINNER Has now been changed to a Sundowner and have finger food. Angela Jess mentioned the Resource Dinner and suggested that it would be a good idea to invite Tectonic and Galaxy as well as BHP to inform members and the Community on issues and developments within the Community. As yet no catering has been organized but Angela will approach local people from Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun first before a decision is made. She suggested that we combine the resource dinner with a Sundowner to attract new members. The Sundowner is proposed for Thursday the 23rd of October 2008 and the proposed location is the Ravensthorpe Sports Centre. The event will be advertised closer to the date. A budget of $200 for the Sundowner to cover incidentals has been approved. FINANCIAL ADMINISTRATOR/PA Alison Harvey is now employed and working as the Financial Administrator and she will be focusing on getting all of our book keeping up to date and on our quick books system which has been purchased and maintain the financials and records for the RRCC projects. The website will be called www.livinginhopetoun.com, and will be live towards the end of September 2008. The intention for the website is to create a reference for current and prospective residents of Hopetoun. It creates a market area where advertisers have high to prospective customers. New residents may have relocated internationally, interstate, or from elsewhere in WA – many of these families have little or no knowledge of the goods and services available in this area and are actively seeking information on the internet. Sports and community events will be listed free of charge. Dear Sharon, FLYING SOLO Why word of mouth matters It’s easy to think of word-of-mouth as being feel-good marketing, but thanks to my contrasting experiences at two international airports, I can report that feel-bad also has its place. Upon arrival in one airport, my travel weary family and I were greeted by surly, edgy airport staff who refused to make eye contact with any of us. At the other side of passport control, John-Paul and I (who were in separate queues) both had tales of how rudely we’d been dealt with. “Why’s it (sic) got a different surname?” the passport officer asked me of my darling daughter, who is but a babe in arms. “Her father and I aren’t married.” I stumbled, feeling ashamed of the fact for the first time. Nowadays, most would agree different last names are a social norm. To the staff of this airport they are a sign that I may be a kidnapper. Meantime in the other airport, the welcome could not have been more different. “How was your trip? Did (glance at passport) Amy get some sleep?” asked the officer. At baggage control a customs official headed our way and invited us through a fast track lane “You don’t want to be hanging around here any longer than necessary, do you?” After thirty hours of travelling, she was spot on. In case you hadn’t guessed, the winner is Sydney. I worked for Tourism New South Wales prior to Sydney 2000, and know how seriously the city took its role as Olympic host. The ‘airport experience’ of visitors was given lots of focus and travellers today are still enjoying the benefits. You’d think that such a brief bad encounter in London would hardly matter. But it turns out to matter a great deal. Because try as I did to brush off the unfriendly welcome, I found myself recounting the experience to friends and family as my first week unfolded. And here I am telling another 14,000 people. At Flying Solo we often talk about the positive benefits of word-of-mouth, but we shouldn’t forget that things can work the other way. I don’t think soloists need to fall over themselves to be chummy with their customers. But being even vaguely rude is a big, fat no no in my book. What negative experiences have you come up against recently? Dish the dirt here and we can all learn from them. CCI INVITATION- DR FIONA WOOD CCI invites members to attend this corporate business luncheon, featuring special guest speaker, Dr Fiona Wood, to officially launch one of CCI's most significant policy papers, Women in Workforce. With chronic labour shortages remaining the biggest challenge for most Western Australian businesses, identifying ways to increase the size of the local labour force, and providing additional incentives to attract and retain workers, has become essential to ensure ongoing business growth. Given that participation rates are markedly lower for women than for men, there exists a significant opportunity to tap into this sector of the community as a means to bolster the State and National workforce. The Women in the Workforce discussion paper explores the key trends and issues related to female workforce participation in Australia and WA, examines recent trends in the female labour force, and sets out the key initiatives which would create an environment which is likely to encourage more women into the workforce. Dr Wood, mother of six, Western Australia's only female plastic surgeon, Head of Royal Perth Hospital's Burns Unit, and 2005 Australian of the Year, will provide an invaluable insight into the challenges confronting women in the workforce. Join us at this important corporate business luncheon to support the launch of one of CCI's most eagerly anticipated, and important, research papers for 2008. Places are limited; book early to ensure your place.
